The release of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were possibly the most comforting release ever. Sure, the iPhone X's changes are insanely cool — but a huge part of Team Apple was intimidated by the thought of making the leap to such a fancy spaceship phone. (An iPhone without a home button? What is this blasphemy?)

For those still stuck with an iPhone 6 or 7 but who aren't ready to convert to the X, the iPhone 8 is the perfect middle ground. The 8 features a gorgeous glass back (compared to the previous aluminum of the 7), a better camera with faster shutter speeds, and our beloved portrait mode. You're also getting updated speakers and wireless charging — all while still enjoying the beloved home button and touch ID. And everyone knows that having the bigger Plus immediately feels fancier. A nightmare became reality on Wednesday when the presidential text alert system sent its first test. Now, Donald Trump can technically text all of us whenever he wants, although it probably won't actually shake out that way.

Still, it's equal parts fun and terrifying to imagine the texts Trump might want to blast to the entire country, which SNL tackled in its "Emergency Alert" sketch Saturday night. The whole thing is framed as a commercial for Cricket Wireless — their service is so bad, you won't get the alerts at all. Where do we sign up?

Admit it: If you got a text alert that said "Puerto Rico is fine now! I guess the paper towels worked," you wouldn't be that surprised. Time to toss your phone into a vat of hot dog water and call it a day. Read more...

Nigerian man falls to death from three storey building in bid to escape police during drug raid in IndiaA 35-year old Nigerian national, allegedly involved in a narcotics racket, fell off a three-storeyed building and died while trying to escape during a police raid late last Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Patrick Ojana. Hyderabad city police commissioner P Anjani Kumar told media on Friday that a team of task force police raided Sri Sai Apartments at Ayodhya Nagar under Asifnagar police station limits, following a specific information that some Nigerians were indulging in illegal drug trade. The police party found three Nigerians in possession of 20 grams of cocaine. The three were immediately taken into custody and brought to the police station for questioning. On the information given by them, the police raided the apartment for a second time. “There was another Nigerian, Ojana, who was hiding in the house. He tried to escape from the spot by sliding down a pipe from the building but slipped midway and fell down. The police shifted the severely injured Ojana to Osmania General Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” the police commissioner said.   Ojana reportedly had similar drug cases registered against him earlier in the Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills police stations. “We have registered a case and are investigating,” he said. Anjani Kumar said the task force police had been conducting regular search operations to prevent smuggling of drugs and narcotics into the city by Nigerians.  “In the last four years, as many as 34 Nigerians were arrested. They were found not only consuming cocaine and opium, but were also supplying to various places in the city,” he said. He appealed to the people to be vigilant about the illegal activities of Nigerians and inform police whenever they found something suspicious. The post Nigerian man falls to death from three storey building in bid to escape police during drug raid in India appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

We're just a month away from the midterm elections, so...where's Megadeth when you need them?

By now, you're probably familiar with Rock the Vote, a voter mobilization nonprofit started by Virgin Records executive in John Ayeroff in 1990. The campaign blew up when it partnered with MTV in advance of the 1990 midterm elections.

The nonprofit is as active as ever. Still, it's the 1990 campaign – featuring LA Gear, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Megadeth, and freaking Deee-Lite – that we need today.

In 1988, less than 40 percent of eligible 18-24 year olds votedAccording to the Pew Research Center, just 20 percent of voters aged 18-24 vote in midterm elections nowadays. That's a marked decrease from 1964, where just over 50 percent of eligible voters in that demographic did.  Read more...

Robot vacuums are the hot item this season and though they could obviously make your life 100 times easier, there's a hard part to the process: picking the right one.

With so many brands, features, and app capabilities out there, deciding which vacuum you're going to drop a hefty load of cash on can be overwhelming. No worries. We hate cleaning just as much as you do and have laid out a simple, comprehensive list of all your best options, sorted by price. Read more...

The Good
Affordable
The Bad
No room-scanning tech or app
The Bottom Line
If you want a robot vacuum and don't care about the fancy stuff, this is a great bare-bones choice.

1. Housesmile Robotic Vaccum

If you don't need the fancy stuff like an app or room-scanning tech, this high-rated device is probably your best bet.
  • Price: $103.99
At the cheapest end of the spectrum you'll find this option from Housmile, which received 5 out of 5 stars by 85% of its reviewers on Amazon. Unlike other vacuums that require a docking station, this one has a simple charging cord, and one charging session can give it enough juice for 30 minutes of vacuuming. What you sacrifice at a cheaper price point are things like room scanning technology and a mobile app, but for someone who isn't that much of a techie but wants to get in on the robot vacuum hype, this is a good option. (And it makes a great gift for grandma.) Get it for $103.99 here.

Would it be okay with you if someone leaked your entire Google history to the government? How about if your internet provider made it so that one episode of Arrested Development took an hour to load?

If you've had a mental breakdown about anything related to the above, you've probably given some thought to getting a VPN.

We know you've seen a ton of VPN reviews from experts across the board, including from our tech team at Mashable. But if you wanted a more raw opinion — or thousands of them — from people with absolutely no filter, there's only one place to go: Reddit.

With his bugged out eyes, elongated face, and overall turtle vibe, Beck Bennett is a brilliant Mitch McConnell. Hopefully he'll have many more opportunities to play the Senate majority leader as the G.O.P faces blowback after voting on Saturday to confirm a historically unpopular — and alleged sexual assaulter, let's not forget — the the U.S. Supreme Court.

The latest Saturday Night Live cold open skipped Matt Damon's Kavanaugh and Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump to focus on the imagined G.O.P. after-party following Kavanaugh's confirmation. It's a bunch of old white men jumping around awkwardly. Plus Susan Collins. Read more...

There’s nothing quite like kicking up your feet and popping open an ice cold beer when you get home. The only thing that might beat that? Washing down a beer that you brewed yourself.

Granted, homebrewing isn’t exactly a quick or easy task. However, homebrewers find real rewards and pleasure in cultivating this craft — including the occasional bragging rights.

The buzz kill: knowing what kind of beer brewing kit is complicated. Beer brewing niche blogs dispense with conflicting advice, like what size kettle you should invest in, or what type of auto siphon you should buy. If you’ve just begun this journey, you might be asking yourself, “So… what exactly is a wort anyway? And how do I safely sanitize my beers?” Read more...

Video: Here's the chaotic aftermath of the UFC fight shortly after Khabib defeated Conor McGregor The biggest fight in UFC history ended in astonishing circumstances and chaos as Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated the 'Notorious' Conor McGregor before leaping over the cage in T-Mobile Arena, sparking a mass brawl. His target was McGregor's team-mate Dillon Danis who also fought back in the ensuing fracas. As the brawl raged outside the ring, one of Khabib's entourage also jumped the cage to punch McGregor in the back of the head. Both fighters were escorted from the stage without a belt presentation or interviews before Khabib was eventually declared by Bruce Buffer as the winner. The Nevada State Athletic commission have withheld Khabib’s $2million pay-check after reviewing footage of the ugly scenes but decided to award McGregor’s $3million. See the video below...The post Video: Here's the chaotic aftermath of the UFC fight shortly after Khabib defeated Conor McGregor appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
